I'm pleased to announce I've introduced my first slate of bills for the 2020 session.
They address many long-held priorities of mine.
Click on the description of each bill below to read a summary.
And from that link, there is another link to the exact text of each bill.
Bringing transparency to the legislative process
HB182 requires streaming and archiving to bring what goes on
in the General Assembly's subcommittees to public light and scrutiny.
Protecting Virginians from secret and unexpectedly large healthcare costs
HB188 requires doctors and hospitals to divulge the costs of procedures long before those procedures take place.
HB189 prohibits surprise overcharges from out-of-network health care providers (balance billing).
Protecting the right to vote and free and fair elections
HB177 enters Virginia into a state compact to abolish the Electoral College.
HB178 resolves ties in elections by special election rather than the drawing of lots.
(See Shelly Simonds in 2017).
HB179 requires recounts to occur only once.
This prevents the unfairness of "discovering" a vote after the recount is completed
(See Shelly Simonds in 2017).
HB190 removes Voter ID requirements and allows a voter without ID
to sign a statement under penalty of perjury and vote.
Making the law work better for Virginians with low incomes
HB183 allows localities more funding to expand their law libraries.
This long-held priority for the City of Alexandria
would bring greater access to justice to the entire community,
including people who can't afford legal representation.
HB184 bans predatory lending with very high interest rates.
Fighting racism
HB180 removes race from being required on a marriage license.
HB181 removes and replaces Virginia's Robert E. Lee statue from the US Capitol.
